Tiny house as a residence? Creative out of the box tiny house use scenarios

A lot of people are currently using tiny houses as their main residence, looking to have new experiences and a different lifestyle, downsizing their material belongings and maximizing their life experiences. However, many  of us aren’t quite there yet. Downsizing your lifestyle takes a lot of time, effort and personal commitment. We are way too used to buy and accumulate stuff, sometimes useful, most of the times not that necessary. Marketers are experts in guiding us to make buying decisions based on our emotions instead of rationality. This makes it extremely hard to fit all our belonging in a reduced space such as a tiny house. However, I believe the versatility and adaptability of tiny houses, specially tiny homes on wheels, are one of their strongest pros vs traditional buildings. In this article I want to explore how you can start your tiny house journey with some of the most interesting uses for tiny houses I have come through in the last couple of years. If you know some other interesting out of the box uses please write them down in the comment section below.

Rental/ Secondary Income

Probably one of the most interesting uses for tiny houses nowadays, using as Airbnb rental units. This is a great way to get a tiny house, either if you are planning to live in one in the future, or you just want some extra source of income, tiny houses on wheels are really popular rental units. If you have a spacious property where to park your tiny house, or you live in a popular area in you town, renting a tiny house is a great way to generate some extra income in a fast way. People are constantly searching for tiny houses to rent,  tiny house searches on Airbnb have skyrocketed increasing over 900% in a couple of years. Renting your tiny house on times when you are not using it, will ensure that you recover your tiny house investment and even start receiving positive cashflow. The great thing  about this is that you will still be able to use it on free days for any of the next following uses.

Home Office/ Studio

We all need some personal work space that motivate us to think and realize our personal projects and goals. This has come even more important during the pandemic where we might sometimes struggle to find a quiet and peaceful place around the house. In this sense, a tiny house is the perfect solution for a portable office space. You can customize it to fit your particular needs. Maybe you just need some space to concentrate on office work, maybe you need to receive potential clients in your home in a more professional way, or maybe you work in a creative field such as music or art industries. Whatever your niche is, a tiny house on wheels is perfect since it has de advantages of a home office or studio, adding the benefit that it might be moved and place in any way you prefer. Also, it has the convenience that it may be used in a secondary manner as any other of the uses we are going to mention below. Price wise, it is probably a cheaper solution than to buy to build a permanent unit with foundations, not to mention faster too. You  won’t need to handle all the construction permits implied with building a traditional office space,, saving money and time too.

Camping/ Vacation Home

Building a vacation home in a remote area is quite of a challenge. From sourcing the materials to finding the right contractors and supervising the whole building process, it adds costs and time very quickly. Either if you want a permanent vacation residence in nature, or you just camping there for a few days, a tiny house on wheels is a great choice making it a great cost effective alternative to traditional building. A tiny house on wheels can be adapted with all necessary services to be used completely off grid, making it a great option to be placed in nature whit a great view, where traditional building would be way more challenging.

Homeschooling/ Playroom

With all this covid pandemic currently going through, it might be a good idea to adapt a room specifically for children education and development. Children in particular, need to have determined spaces for studying and learning in order to promote their focus and motivation and to create positive routines. Also, instead of having children toys all around the house, everything could stay in place contributing with your peace of mind. The neat thing of using a tiny house as a classroom for children, is that it can be repurposed as any of the mentioned uses below, when it is no longer necessary.

Yoga/Gym room

Yoga Is a hot topic nowadays, tons of new evidence is found about how it contributes to keep our body and mind healthy. A room dedicated specifically to our  health and peace of mind would be a great idea. Either if you do group yoga or alone, having a separate place that allows you to place some distance between you and your everyday environment will contribute for a better overall experience. If you currently struggle with consistency in your exercise or meditation routine, having a room specifically designed for that would be really beneficial.

Guest room/ Nanny room

Probably the most common use for tiny houses out there is as a guest room. Sometimes our houses aren’t well suited to receive guests for longer periods of time, or maybe we want a little more privacy for our family. Either way, a tiny house is the perfect solution. It can be made a really comfortable place to receive guest with all the amenities they need within the unit while preserving our privacy. This is especially useful for older people that don’t want to spend on expensive day care centers. Having a place where they can be completely independent but at the same time, being close to their families is a great position to be in as an elder.

I guess the point I want to get through with this small article is that tiny houses, although great to live in, are a really flexible and interesting type of construction. Any other type of construction is as versatile, being able to be adapted or used in such many ways as a tiny house on wheels. Although the concept of tiny houses of wheels might not be a new one, recent advances on transportation and energy production techniques have allowed for completely autonomous movable living units. Nobody knows for sure how the future will look like, but my guess is that we will start to see more and more people living in tiny houses, reducing the carbon footprint as well as focusing more on communities and shared spaces that allow for more human interaction. How do you think the future of living and housing will look like? Please leave some of your ideas down below

Hello world!

Welcome to HOME tiny HOUSE

After watching countless hours of tiny house videos on YouTube, as well as the stories of the people living on them and the lifestyle they had, focusing more on experiences and adventures rather than accumulating stuff, I decided that was the way I was planning to live. So I started looking at the prices of tiny houses on YouTube videos and the most popular tiny house builders, but they were all close to 70 or 80k sometimes ever as high as 100k, which I found to be to step, almost in the range of a regular home. So I gathered some people and started building my first tiny house myself. Currently we are a small group of tiny house builders and designers based in Mexico and shipping to all USA. Since the beginning, we decided to be different to any other tiny house builder out there, creating modern high quality tiny house builds for an tiny price. We are currently about 30 to 40% lower in price and our tiny houses have great quality materials and finishes as shown in our tiny house video walk through.

This year, as we are getting more and more emails and questions regarding tiny house living and financing, I decided to start a small blog and YouTube Channel covering tiny house topics and answering some questions we receive the most. We will make the videos short and sweet with the things we had learned among the way. Please check it out and subscribe, we are posting a new blog article and video at least every Wednesday. Sit down and enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJOR7MW4MBJ_qgUFHh7z_WA
